You may have a very good idea of the kind of business you wish to undertake. You may wish to have your own business but not know what that business should be. In both cases much thought should be given before launching off. Good research and close examination of your own character, attitudes and aptitudes are essential before you start.
Here are a few pointers:
- Make lists of everything you can do. No matter how small or seemingly trivial, set them down.
- What do you love doing? Include hobbies, satisfying tasks, occasional events.
- What are others doing? Search Yellow Pages, go to the library, surf the internet.
- When you narrow down your choices think about whether you can handle every aspect.Don’t be put off – you can often buy the bits you can’t do, for example, there are accountants who will set out your financial records.
- Where will you work? Think out how you will arrange your work area and what equipment you will need.
- Check out any regulations concerned with your business in your locality.
- Will your business fit in with your family life? Can you run it without damaging the family or the business? Will your family give support?

The majority of people find Resume Writing a problem. They don’t know how to start, what to include, or what kind of format to use.
The Resume (or CV – Curriculum Vitae) requires a particular form of writing. This is quite a straightforward way of writing. Once you become familiar with it you will be able to produce the finished article with ease.
How do you learn how to write Resumes? Well there are plenty of books on the subject. There are also various sites online where you will find templates and tips. I suggest that you read up about how it should be done. Then prepare a Resume for yourself.
Use your friends and family to practise interviewing and producing Resumes. When you are happy that you can offer a good service begin advertising. Small adverts wherever job seekers will be looking will start you off. Then word of mouth will keep you going and indeed growing.

Gift Baskets are beautiful to receive. As with any business begin by writing down ideas and carrying out research.
1 What kind of Gift Baskets can be produced? Well name an event and you will probably be able to concoct a Gift Basket which is appropriate.
2 For each Gift Basket you would like to produce list the items you might include.
3 Price each item – don’t forget the cost of the basket itself. Total to see what it is going to cost you to assemble.
4 Research others who are providing a similar service. What are they charging?
Be realistic. Can you add enough profit to make an income? Can you compete? What can you add which will single you out?
Don’t forget delivery costs. If your are operating locally you will need to work out the running costs of your transport. If you are choosing to run a mail order service, are you going to include delivery or charge this on top?
Obviously much to think about but this is a truly satisfying service because of the pleasure it brings to the recipients.

Many people these days realise that they should undertake some form of exercise. They want to keep fit and possibly lose weight. Women especially find it difficult to attend classes because of family responsibilities. Having a Personal Fitness Trainer gives them the chance to schedule the training at a suitable time.
How do you become a Personal Fitness Trainer?
1 You must have an active interest in exercise
2 Undertake and training/coaching course which will give you suitable qualifications.
3 Take examination which will provide a recognised certificate and/or licence.
4 Gather required equipment.
You do not have to look like Mr/Miss Universe. In fact, it is better if you look pretty average as you will not intimidate your clients.
This is a good area to work in because:
1 You can choose the times you will book appointments – as few or as many as you want.
2 Personal contact often leading to friendship.
3 Possibility of building a business with employees.

Do you have green fingers? With a little room and a bit of effort you can produce potted plants for sale. You can grow from seed, buy in seedlings, propagate using cuttings. There is an almost insatiable desire by people to have plants for their gardens or inside their homes. You can fulfil this need.
How do you sell your plants? There are several avenues open to you. Plants can be sold at every stage of their development. If you grow from seed then you can sell them as soon as you have produced strong tiny plants called ‘plugs’. You could buy plugs and bring them on ready for the garden or pot. You can obtain good sturdy plants from which to take cuttings to produce yet more of the same. You will see that there are many stages at which people will want them.
Who will buy? Mail order customers depending on ability to package various plants. Local stores – wherever you think there could be an outlet for your produce. Garden Centres are always on the lookout for extra plants and/or something a little different. Even from your own driveway if you put out signs and display your plants.
This business will fit in well around your everyday life. It will also fit in well in the smallest of spaces – depending on what you choose to do. There is also a good chance to expand.

What do you know about your town? Tell others about it by conducting guided walks.
Most towns have their hidden secrets, handed down stories and historical happenings. If your particular town attracts tourists so much the better. You will find that there are many titbits of information that even the inhabitants are unaware of.
Learn all you can about the architecture, history, local personalities, famous people who have visited and any anecdotes and legends. In fact, find out everything you can about the place right down to barely visible markings and gory crimes. Then plan out several interesting routes.
When you are ready with all your facts, start advertising your guided walks. Have posters and leaflets at all the places where visitors to the town will see them: hotels, rooming houses, tourist information points, restaurants, libraries, and so on.
Have a designated place for people to just turn up at the set time. Collect the money before you set out. Earn extra by having small items of local interest to sell. Stop by a gift shop. Finish at a café. Don’t forget to talk with the owners of these establishments beforehand to arrange commissions.

What do you need to be successful working for yourself? The most important thing is to have an objective. Once you know what you want you have to decide how you can reach it. So are you going to continue with the work you do now – but for yourself – or are you going to strike out on something completely different?
Whichever you choose you will find that there are tasks with which you haven’t had to deal in the past. This means that you will need to learn or buy these gaps in your knowledge. You may have to learn to sell your wares or services. You may need to pay an accountant to keep your finances in order.
Don’t be put off by the gaps in your knowledge. Decide how you are going to overcome these challenges.
The most important consideration is the business you are going to build based on work that you enjoy. The big plus, of course, is that you will be working for yourself. Keep this in mind and the few chores which have to be completed will become less tiresome.

There are many businesses which find courier services useful.
You can run a service from anywhere. Home would make a good base. These days communication is so easy – a computer at home and a mobile phone or Blackberry when on the move.
Transport will depend on whether you work in urban or rural areas. In town motor cycles are the easier option. In country areas a car or small van would probably be preferable.
You can start small and work up your clientele. In all probability you will know your way around your local area. If you intend taking on assignments further afield you will need to have maps (and the ability to read them!) or satellite navigation equipment.
This is a business which you can expand and eventually employ others. You can even at this stage run operations from home.

If you are fit and healthy and can climb ladders then window cleaning could be the business for you. The start up costs are low and you can begin straight away.
Start by collecting together a ladder, buckets, chamois, cloths and wiper. Then clean all the windows of your own house or a friend’s. Time yourself, count the windows. You will be working out your charges on this information.
When you know what you are going to be doing and how much to charge, work out a small leaflet advertisement. Get these printed off from your computer. Choose the streets you want to be working in and post the leaflets through every door.
When the replies begin to come discuss requirements and book them in. Then when you do the job at each house call at the neighbouring properties to offer you services in person pointing out that you are already working in the area.
This can build into a very good solid business. Of course, if you want it to grow more then employ others and maybe spread further afield.
